The great Aussie Chook Shed is almost a national icon. Handmade with scrap tin and 2x4's bearing the indents of a hundred enthusiastic nails, it typically stands in the far corner of the suburban house yard, alone in its fallen-down, relic-of-a-past-age glory.

Now you can enjoy a fresh modern visage of the same traditional pen. Standing 2 meters tall, and inculding a full-size door, meshed window for breezes, large external laying box and roosting rails to suit up to 30 chooks, this pen is roomy and strongly built, suitable for any poultry as a night-time lockup. If mounted on a 3mx3m concrete slab it also becomes rodent-proof, hygenic and easy to clean.

For those more permaculture-minded, we recommend installing the optional extra Small Doors, which fit to the bottom of the pen and open with a sliding bolt to allow the chooks access to individual chicken-wire runs at a time.

The photos below illustrate the way we used our own chook shed. Centrally positioned on a concrete slab in the middle of four large chicken wire runs, we let the chooks into one pen at a time. The other runs are used for planting veggies or crops like sunfllowers for the chooks to enjoy. Hugely productive, you will find the use of pens like these to be an ideal way to have a thriving, fertile veggie patch. Tried and tested, we highly recommend it! Photos coming soon...

EAT: Four young laying hens housed in our chicken tractor will eat 400grams of layer pellets per day. A 20 kilogram bag of layer pellets costs approximately $10.00 and over the course of a year they will consume 9 bags, costing $90 per year.

LAY: Each day four laying hens will lay approximately 3 eggs, totalling 89 dozen eggs per year. In a supermarket free range eggs cost approximately $5 per dozen. Therefore you have just produced $445 worth of eggs for just $90.
